Montessori Lesson Plan Sample

Africa Kit- Lesson 1 of 7

Materials Needed:

  1. African Adventures book – My Safari Diary; Day 1 (pages 4-17)
  2. Replicas of zebra, cheetah, giraffe, antelope, hippopotamus, and a leopard
  3. Cards of the different types of antelopes (gerenuk, topi, Thomson’s gazelle, did-dik, greater kudu, gemsbok)
  4. Bird cards (oxpecker, weaver bird, cattle egret, vulture, ostrich, flamingo)
  5. Cheetah and leopard cards (for differentiated activity
  6. Montessori mat (if desired)

Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to introduce the first part of African Adventures, to study African birds and to study African antelopes.

Vocabulary:  diary, safari, jeep, savannah, gazelle, dik-dik.

 

Suggested time: 45 min- 60 min

 

Activity 1

  • Invite your student to join you at a workplace. Explain that the title of the book you will be reading is African Adventures. Explain that you will read this book in parts. Ask, “What may be the benefits of reading a book in parts rather than at once?”
  •  P.4 -Ask, “How does the narrator (person telling the story) describe experience of getting to Africa?”
  • P. 5 – What is the narrator’s goal for this trip?
  • P. 5 – What bird did the narrator see and how does she feel about it?
  • P. 7 – Why was it necessary to wake up early?
  • P. 7 – What animals do you see? What are they doing?
  • As you come across an animal in the book, show your student the replica of that animal. Have your student examine it and describe it to you (For instance when you read about the giraffe on page 9, show your student the replica of a giraffe).
  • Pages 10 and 11 – discuss the different types of antelopes. How are they similar? How are they different?
  • P. 12 – Name 3 unique things you learned about hippos.
  • P.14 – How can snakes be characterized?
  • After listening to “The World Tree” ask your student to retell it in his or her own words.
  • Without looking at the book, ask your student to tell you about the different features of antelopes by laying out the cards of all the types in front of them.

 

Activity 2 – African birds

  • Lay out the bird cards in front of your student.
  • Go over the name of each bird. Ask your student to describe what the bird on the card is doing.
  • How are these birds similar? How are they different?
  • Based on your prior knowledge of birds, can these birds survive anywhere or is Africa the best place for them to live?
  • How does the ostrich compare to other birds (Although it is a bird, it is a flightless bird). Ask, do you know any other flightless birds? (penguin)

 

 

Differentiated activities:

  • Compare a cheetah to a leopard by looking at the cards. How are they different? How are they similar? (Cheetah has black tear marks on their face, a leopard does not.  Different spots.  Cheetahs are thinner and have longer tails).
  • On page 6 is the schedule for the day. Create a schedule for your day!
  • Create a mythical story about fire.

 

Extension Activities (use previous kits)

Birds, Birds, Birds

Materials needed: North American Birds chart and cards from the North America Kit and cards of birds from Africa Kit. Compare African birds to North American birds. Make a prediction – how would African birds survive in North America? Review bird anatomy and explain that all birds – those that live in Africa, North America or another continent have the same anatomy, including wings and feathers.
